The International Federation of Photographic Art
Today at the new FIAP approved exhibition centre at the Dublin Camera Club, 36 Irish photographers received their FIAP distinctions. Kilkenny Photographic Society received 4 of these distinctions – Artiste FIAP. The 4 members are as follows:
Derville Conroy – LIPF LRPS AFIAP
Ned Mahon – AIPF AFIAP
Andrew Magan – LIPF AFIAP

Great news for Kilkenny Photographic Society from the SACC round of the Photographer of the Year Competition. Seamus Costello was awarded “The Seamus Scullane Trophy” for the IPF Photographer of the Year. He was also awarded a Gold Medal in the Colour Print Themed (Advanced). He also received a Gold Medal in the Mono Print (Advanced).

Derville Conroy was awarded a Silver Medal in the Mono Print Open (Advanced.)

Denis O’Reilly was awarded a Gold Medal in the Projected Open (non-advanced). Denis was also awarded a Bronze Medal and an Honourable Mention in the Projected Open (non-advanced).

Dieter Rowe Setz was awarded  an Honourable Mention in the Projected Open (non-advanced). There were lots of compliments from other clubs. It has been a great year for Kilkenny Photographic Society. Well done to all!!




Kilkenny Photographic Society – KPS are Irish Photographic Federation National Shield Champions 2017.

At the National Shield Competition held in Limerick on Sunday, 26th November, Kilkenny Photographic Society were declared this year’s winners of the National Shield. Of the 26 clubs that entered the competition Kilkenny were award the following honours.

Well done to all those who submitted photos for this competition and to the very hardworking selection committee of Andy Magan, Karen O’ Hara, Mark Desmond, Derville Conroy and Ned Mahon who gave long hours selecting photographs for the panels and in preparing the successful photos for the competition.



Major Events

KPS Photographer of the Year

Each year we hold a Photographer of the Year (PotY) competition for KPS members. A series of themed competitions, including print and projected, are held and the marks accumulated to find the KPS winning member. The winner receives a PotY trophy and their name is engraved on the KPS perpetual PotY trophy. The competition covers three levels of skill – Novice, Intermediate and Advanced.

Kilkenny Arts Festival Exhibition

In August each year the Society participates in the Kilkenny Arts Festival extravaganza by holding an exhibition of members images as a fringe event.

KPS Transition Year Photography Competition

This is an annual competition for Transition Year students in Kilkenny City, County and surrounding areas. Inaugurated by club member, Donal Byrne, it has grown in popularity over the years.

Other Activities

Society members have also exhibited in Kilkenny Castle with their exhibition ‘Kilkenny War Dead (1914-1918)’. Club members have provided images for the KSPCA annual calendar. More recently the society has been invited by the management of St. Luke’s General Hospital, Kilkenny to provide a permanent exhibition for their arts exhibition area and is currently on display. The society has in the past hosted national photographic competitions in conjunction with the I.P.F. Example of which more recently was the I.P.F Photographer of the Year and I.P.F Nature Photographer of the Year competitions.


The Southern Association of Camera Clubs (SACC) – The Southern Association of Camera Clubs (SACC) is the region of the Irish Photographic Federation (IPF) covering the south of the country from Arklow to Clare

The Irish Photographic Federation (I.P.F) – The Irish Photographic Federation is comprised of photographic clubs throughout the Republic of Ireland. It is governed by a National Council, the members of the Council being elected at the AGM from member clubs.

About us

Kilkenny Photographic Society (KPS) is a medium sized association of photographers with skill levels from beginner to professional. New members (Adults 18yrs and over)are always welcome of any ability from beginners to advanced.

The society’s program varies to the needs of the members, but typically it’s a mix of group outings, guest speakers, workshops and internal competitions. KPS is a member of the Irish Photographic Federation (IPF) and the (Irish) Southern Association of Camera Clubs (SACC) and participates in their competitions. Members also compete in international Photographic Salon competitions. Members are encouraged to pursue accreditations in photography from the IPF.

Where we meet

The current meeting place for Kilkenny Photographic Society is in the Pembroke Hotel, Business centre,11 Patrick Street, Kilkenny, R95 VNP4. Phone:(056) 7783500.
The society meets on Thursday evenings with the formal programme commencing at 8 pm sharp. The room is opened by 7:30
pm to prepare for the meeting. It is requested that all mobile phones and other electronic equipment are switched off before the meeting starts.


Our aim is to serve our members by encouraging development of their photographic skills through education, exhibitions of photographic accomplishments, friendship with others who share a love of photography and to share our talents with individuals and organisations in our community.
