This week KPS member Denis O’Reilly is taking us through his workflow process for a still life image.

His demonstration will include :

  • equipment used
  • set-up and composition
  • different types of lighting – natural, artificial, Lightbox, light painting
  • displaying practical examples of each type of lighting
  • Use of textures
  • demonstration of simple workflow on sample still life
  • Practical demonstration on light painting using a torch.

Please bring along your tripod and camera as there will be an opportunity to try out the techniques shown on the night.

The IPF National Shield date has been announced to take place on the 18th Nov 2018.  Can you bring in your images (large jpgs) in on a USB key on next Thursday evening and we will collect them from you.

Also a quick reminder that the next competition is projected and the theme is “OPEN” . It will close on Sunday 21st  October 2018.

You can submit up to 2 images which can be colour or B&W.

Please follow the instructions on how to resize your image[s] in the members section of the website

If you need any help with the resizing, Lukasz our new Competition Secretary will be on hand to guide you through the process from 7:30 pm on Thursday in the Pembroke Hotel.

This week at the KPS we have the judging of our first competition of the year. The themes were as follows

Kilkenny Flora & FaunaKilkenny  Urban / LandscapePeople of Kilkenny

Also please note that this coming Thursday is the cutoff date to submit your images on PicLogger  ( )  for the Biodiversity Conference.

The Heritage officer of Kilkenny County council is also looking for your Biodiversity images. They need images from the following areas of  County Kilkenny as part of their citizen science project in conjunction with the National Biodiversity Data Centre.

• KK CastlePark • Castlemorris • Brandon Hill • Tory Hill •Woodstock • Dunmore Caves • Ballykeefe Nature Reserve • Brownsbarn Woods • Silaire Woods • River Nore Walk (KK City- Bennettsbridge; Thomastown to Inistioge) • Castlecomer Discovery Park • Jenkinstown Woods • Kyledohir Woods • Kells (River & walk) • Newpark Marsh • County Hall grounds.

They would be delighted if any of our members have high res photos of flora or fauna at these sites and some would be chosen to go up on their website.

They need your large jpegs labelled as Species_Area_Photographer Name

I.e. Red Squirrel_Jenkinstown Woods_Derville Conroy

Bring them in on a USB key on Thursday and Derville will collect them from you.

FYI – For those of you who missed it – the Annual General Meeting of the KPS was held last Thursday night 20th September in the Pembroke Hotel, Kilkenny. Our new committee for the 2018-19 season is as follows:

The new Membership rates were decided upon for 2018-19. The fees for the year are as follows: Annual membership costs €120 per year, with a reduced rate of €90 for members who are not in gainful employment or where a member has attained the age where they qualify for a state pension. Payments can be made in instalments if it’s more convenient.

This week, 13th September, is the hand-in for our first monthly competition. The theme is Biodiversity – Flora & Fauna of Kilkenny, People of Kilkenny and Landscapes/Cityscapes of Kilkenny. It’s a print competition and prints should be mounted 20″x16″. Members may enter 3 prints if they wish for this competition. For other competitions you may enter just 2 prints or files.

We will also have a portrait night so bring your camera and props along to the meeting.

October’s competition is “OPEN” projected and the closing date is 21st October. You will get instructions on where to upload or send your files later on.
