Kilkenny Photographic Society is pleased to announce another successful Awards Night for the Transition Year Photography Competition. This is the 7th year of the competition. The event was held in the Springhill Hotel on Thursday, 27th April at 7.30pm.
This year’s competition attracted hundreds of photographs from transition year students in Kilkenny City and County. Their entries were judged by Amanda Burke LIPF and Karen O’ Hara AIPF, both members of Kilkenny Photographic Society. The top three photographs from each school and the overall five best photographs were announced on the night. We would like to thank Canon, White’s Pharmacy, Hennessy Sports, Kilkenny County Council and Kilkenny Photographic Society for their very generous sponsorship of this event.
The function room was packed to capacity on the night with students, teachers and parents. John Hughes, Chairman of Kilkenny Photographic Society, welcomed everyone and particularly our special guests Alan Murphy, Canon Brand Manager and Kieran White of White’s Pharmacy who were major sponsors. The judges started the proceedings with a soft critique of the top 3 images from each school. Both were very knowledgeable about photography and were constructive in their critique of the entries, offering very useful advice and tips. The top three students in each school received medals – gold, silver and bronze in order of merit. The medals were presented to the students by John Hughes, Chairman of Kilkenny Photographic Society
There was a short interval for the raffle before the top five winners were announced. The overall winner received a DSLR camera, worth €400 sponsored by Canon, second place received a digital camera sponsored by White’s Chemists and the other three winners received vouchers sponsored by Kilkenny Photographic Society. The respective sponsors presented these prizes to the winners.
Afterwards there were refreshments with plenty of time to view the winning entries and for photographs of the winners by Harry Reid, Kilkenny People and Mark Desmond, Kilkenny Photographic Society. We thank all our sponsors and particularly Kilkenny County Council whose support, through the Arts Grant Scheme, made this year’s event a huge success. We also thank the Springhill Hotel for their welcome, courtesy and helpfulness on the night. The facilities were top class.
A special word of thanks to the members of the of the KPS Committee who contributed to the success of the competition and who were very active helping out on the night.
